Malaysia Airlines has relaunched a new direct service to the Maldives, Asia’s smallest country, with a successful opening flight from Kuala Lumpa.

The Malaysia Airlines Boeing 737-800 left Kuala Lumpa International Airport (KUL) shortly after 10am, local time, on August 1, 2024, before arriving at Velana International Airport (MLE) around four hours later.

Flight MH485 was completely full with 174 passengers on board the Boeing 737-800 and was welcomed with a water salute at Velena.

In addition to the new Maldives service, Malaysia Airlines will also launch routes to Chiang Mai, Thailand from August 15, 2024, and daily flights to Danang, Vietnam from September 24, 2024.

The Maldives becomes Malaysia Airlines’ 13th destination in South Asia, which the carrier says reinforces its “commitment to expanding its presence in key markets”.

“We are thrilled to be flying back to Maldives, which enhances our strategic vision of connecting travelers to some of the world’s most captivating destinations. By offering direct flights to the Maldives, we aim to position Malaysia Airlines as the top choice for those seeking both luxury and cultural richness,” Ahmad Luqman Mohd Azmi, CEO of Malaysia Aviation Group.

He added: “It also signifies a strategic initiative to solidify our standing in the luxury travel segment, showcasing our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of discerning travelers and strengthening our competitive edge in the market.”

Representatives from the Maldives welcomed the recommencement of Malaysia Airlines direct services to the country.

Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO of Maldives Marketing and PR Corporation, said that the new service will not only boost arrivals but also “diversify our tourism base”.

Malaysia Airlines last operated direct flights into the Maldives in 2017.
