Singapore will resume work on the new Terminal 5 at Changi International Airport (SIN) , as travel demand and passenger traffic return.
Construction is expected to commence in two or three years, with plans to have the new Terminal 5 building operational by the mid-2030s.
“Given the current and projected recovery in air travel demand, we have a renewed impetus to secure our infrastructural capacity for growth,” Singapore’s Minister of Transport S Iswaran said during the Changi Aviation Summit 2022.
The news comes two years after the airport temporarily halted works on the new airport terminal as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic setbacks.
“We have taken the opportunity of the two-year hiatus to comprehensively review the T5 design to make it more modular and flexible and enhance its resilience and sustainability,” Iswaran added. “We will re-mobilize the design and engineering consultants progressively, to update and further refine the T5 design.”
Passenger traffic in Singapore has already more than doubled to above 40% of pre-pandemic levels in May 2022, compared to just under 20% in mid-March 2022.
